Week 13:

Although this week we did not meet in class, I learned a lot from chapters sixteen and seventeen. These chapters were about solving fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and understanding the concept of percents and decimals. I really enjoy looking at the end of the chapters for new information about using websites and/or even literature! At the end of chapter sixteen, it provides a book about Alice in Wonderland, but in this story her shrinking calls for the use of fractions and multiplication. I had never heard of this book before and it fits perfectly for this concept! The online resources are nice too and I think the students will definitely benefit from using them. For chapter seventeen, the online resources are very good because it contains many “game” type of activities that will call the students’ attention. The book that the chapter presents is very interesting because it does involve an interesting story about a boy and it is mostly about fractions, which allows for opening a conversation about percentages. I have heard that students need more practice on this subject and both the chapter and group that presented this chapter did an excellent job at explaining the best way to apply this concept in class. I remember that when I was younger and was learning about percents and decimals, I struggled a lot to understand how to convert one to the other. I think that in these times, the best way to go about this subject is by using real-world objects. Finally, I like being a part of the Blackboard discussions because sometimes I interpret the material in one way and my classmates interpret it differently. Also, they talk about their experiences and/or ideas on how to teach that concept. That gives me many great ideas on how to present it to the children in my internship classroom!
